Volunteers

"I came late to the game of Sibs Camp. Not getting involved as a volunteer until I was in my late 50s. I watched 3 of my 4 kids volunteer every summer. I would listen as they told their camp stories, wipe away the tears after an exceptionally emotional and tiring weekend, and laugh along with them at camp jokes, I envied them. The weeks they spent at camp changed them. I felt this desire to join in that connection. As soon as the campers step off the bus that first day you see their joy. You hear their sighs of relief. You see their eyes light up when they spy on a favorite counselor and throw their arms around them in a big hug. Camp is home."

Campers

"If I was given the chance to change my experience with cancer. I wouldn't. The connections I've made with campers, volunteers, parents, nurses, and peers are far too valuable in my life to ever consider changing. I often find myself thinking of all of these amazing people I'm best friends with and how lucky I am. But at the same time, if I didn't have cancer, we would have never met. How absolutely shitty but amazing is that? Camp gave me my best friends. Camp gave me the only people who I know I can 100% be myself around and I know they will love me. Camp gave me a family that understands the lifelong effects that battling cancer as a child cause."

Parents

"All the time I get, "Why have you volunteered for CR4TS for 18 years? What keeps you coming back?". Yes, it is absolutely the campers!! Why the campers? Well. for a couple of different reasons. As a parent, if I had to hear those words, your child has cancer, I don't know what I would do. For our ROC campers, as a counselor, I can give that parent peace of mind that I will take care of this camper as if they were my own. I was there for the camper for one week so that they did not have to think about their diagnosis and just be a kid. I give that parent a week of not having to worry about their child. It gives the camper, as well as the parent, 6 days of normalcy."
